Nick Solomon is a ceramics and metal artist working on Cape Cod. He throws functional stoneware finished in pale, restless glazes, and works at the bench in silver and cast metal.
Ceramics
Vessels thrown on the wheel and glazed so the surface does some of the work — colour pooling where the form turns, breaking pale over the shoulders. Each firing settles differently, so no two pots leave the kiln quite alike.
Metalwork & casting
Alongside the pots, Nick works in metal — fabricating at the bench and casting. It is the same instinct as the ceramics, worked in a harder material: simple forms, finished by hand until they feel right.
Most recently that has meant wedding rings. He made two sets — one for his brother's wedding, one for his sister's — sized, filed and polished at the bench.

About
Nick has been making pottery since high school, and went on to take a bachelor's degree in studio art at Skidmore College.
He works today in Cotuit, on Cape Cod — throwing, glazing and firing ceramics, and working metal at the bench. The work is meant to be used: cups that suit the hand, vases that hold a few stems from the garden, rings worn every day.
